It was a disappointing evening for Moulton as they fell to a 2–0 defeat against Daventry, who handled the pitch and conditions impressively throughout.
The first half was a tight contest, with Moulton feeling aggrieved not to have been awarded a penalty twice — once inside the opening 10 seconds and again late in the half. Despite those moments, it was Daventry who took the lead midway through the first half, scoring against the run of play with a superb strike from over 20 yards that gave the goalkeeper no chance.
Moulton came out strongly after the break and looked the more likely side to score, applying pressure and creating a number of promising situations. However, Daventry’s defensive organisation proved outstanding, keeping Moulton at bay.
The game’s decisive moment came in the second half when a Daventry breakaway led to a penalty after the Moulton goalkeeper brought down the striker. The resulting spot-kick was converted to make it 2–0.
Moulton were later given a penalty of their own, but the effort was saved, summing up a frustrating night in front of goal. A few other chances came and went for Moulton, but none were taken. Daventry also had opportunities to extend their lead, hitting the post and seeing another effort cleared off the line.
Overall, despite Moulton’s spells of pressure, Daventry’s resilience and clinical finishing meant they deserved the victory.
