Moulton U18s delivered an impressive performance to secure a 3–0 victory over third-placed Wellingborough in the Jaymann Shield Cup, in what proved to be a competitive and well-contested match between two strong sides.
The opening stages were evenly matched, with a strong wind influencing play and both teams showing quality on the ball. It was Moulton who broke the deadlock, capitalising on a well-worked set-piece. A corner routine found Evan Dye, who rose well to head home the opening goal.
Moulton doubled their lead shortly after through another clever set play. Adam Dicks delivered a quick-thinking free kick to Jamil Yusuf, who turned the Wellingborough centre-back and struck the bar. Louie Kelly, later named Man of the Match(sponsored by MC electrical) reacted quickest to slot home the rebound.
Wellingborough had an opportunity to get back into the game before half-time, but their striker’s heavy first touch allowed the Moulton goalkeeper to gather comfortably. Moulton were also denied what looked a clear penalty after a challenge on Kelly just before the break.
Half-time: Wellingborough 0–2 Moulton U18s
The second half began with Wellingborough showing intent, creating a half chance that was well dealt with by Moulton keeper Mason Webb, who produced an excellent piece of goalkeeping.
Moulton soon extended their advantage, with Mo Kahn calmly finishing to make it 3–0 and put his side firmly in control. Both teams made several substitutions as the game opened up, with chances at either end, but Moulton maintained their composure to see out the win.
Overall, it was a strong performance from Moulton against a good Wellingborough side, with both teams contributing to an entertaining cup tie
