Plate Cup Semi Final v Olney Ladies FC

John Gilding26 Mar - 14:53

Chance for a Cup Final date in May but will need to play well/

Moulton started brightly and Georgie played Cat away down the right. Cat tried an ambitious shot that was fielded by the keeper. This was soon followed by a headed chance from a free kick that went wide. A lively start from Moulton. After 7 minutes of Moulton pressure and decent passing, Sophie G played a superb ball inside the Olney defender, Cat ran onto it and hit the ball first time into the far corner of the goal for 1-0 Moulton and at this stage, well deserved. However, Moulton then seemed to forget their passing game and joined in with Olney at kicking the ball anywhere other than to one of their own players. After 15 minutes the ball found its way to Moulton's keeper who cleared and somehow the ball found its way straight to an Olney player who shot round the post. Just two minutes later Chloe played a good ball through for Cat to run on to but the ball ran away from her and was cleared. On 20 minutes Sophie G took a free kick but this was parried and then cleared by Olney's keeper. There was then some promising interplay between Chloe and Cat but the through ball was a bit strong and came to nothing. Just after 20 minutes an Olney cross into Moulton's area saw Hayley take a knock and she needed treatment but continued. Half Time 1-0 Moulton.
2nd half began and slowly Olney played their way into the contest with Moulton players seemingly not able to find a pass to their own players. Chloe had to leave at half time to go to work. After 60 minutes a good through ball from Hayley found Cat racing through and she lobbed the onrushing keeper and the ball narrowly went round the post. Then on 70 minutes a slight push from Kim saw an Olney player fall over and a penalty was awarded. Hattie had taken over in goal for the 2nd half and she has a habit of getting close to penalty kicks.Up stepped the Olney penalty taker and her shot towards the corner look a goal but Harriet dived to her right and got a hand to the ball, she quickly recovered and got her hand on the ball which was then kicked out of her hand by the penalty taker. The ensuing goal being disallowed by the referee. Olney had their tails up and looked the better side at this point. However, Moulton then won a corner but this was cleared up field where it became 2 on 1 and a goal looked on but the shot at goal was again well saved by Harriet in the Moulton goal. Most of the pressure in the 2nd half was coming from Olney who looked more and more dangerous. On 82 minutes Olney had a corner on the left. A decent corner came over and was missed by all until Olney's number 7 stuck out a foot and diverted the ball into the top corner for the equaliser. One last chance to Moulton on 88 minutes saw Jess move the ball onto her left foot for a shot but the ball was caught by Olney's keeper. A spectator near me remarked about Jess's ball control and skill level. The match then fizzled out and the result was 1-1, with final result to be decided by a penalty shoot out.
Olney went first and their player skied the kick over the bar. Then Jess stepped up for Moulton and sidefooted into the right corner of the goal for 1-0 Moulton. Next up saw the Olney player hit a good penalty into the corner, Harriet guessed the right was but couldnt reach the kick 1-1. Then up stepped the experienced Kim, who calmly hit into the left corner of the goal for 2-1 Moulton. The next Olney player then skied her shot over the bar. Up stepped Hayley, who had volunteered to take a penalty. She duly sidefooted into the left corner of the goal beating the diving Olney keeper for 3-1 Moulton. The next Olney player went for the top left corner of the net only to be high and wide with her shot. Final result 3-1 win for Moulton on penalties.
Moulton therefore will play either Crick or Kingsthorpe Jets, who play their semi final this coming weekend. The final being at Steel Park, Corby towards the end of May 2026. Player of the Match by a landslide was Harriet, Moulton's 2nd half keeper, which was indicative of the Olney 2nd half display. Well done Ladies.
Back to the league this Sunday with the visit of Corby Ladies.
