Match Report v Holmer Green - 10 April 2023

Lge (Home)
Won 7 - 3
(H/T 4 - 2)
Moulton welcomed Holmer Green to Brunting Rd on Easter Monday for the first time ever in a quick holiday weekend double header having lost the corresponding Spartan League Division 1 reverse fixture 3-1 in Buckinghamshire on Saturday last. The Magpies were helped by the return of a number of players that were not available 2 days earlier, and two of them combined within 3 minutes of the kick off, Nat Ansu broke away on the left leaving a defender trailing in his wake, and then cut in and his cross found top scorer JOEY EVANS who tucked it away nicely. The home side had a really good chance in the next minute when Ansu and JJ Macarthy combined to set up Cole Mason but he skied his shot over Bar, Fence, and School Hedge. However the second goal did come only 5 minutes later, Tom O,Neill swung over a free kick from the left which the Holmer keeper seemed to take with ease, however he unfortunately dropped the ball and MACARTHY was on hand to hook it into the net. Moulton were moving the ball around very well and a sweeping move down the left involving Steffano Koffi, O,Neill and Evans saw ANSU net into the top corner with only 13 minutes gone. Surprisingly Moulton took their foot off the pedal and the visitors got back into the game with a far post header after 26 minutes, but with 6 minutes of the half left the Magpies restored their 3 goal lead. Manny Asante started the move and then Ansu fed O,Neill out on the left and his cross was converted by MACARTHY for his second of the game. A topsy turvey half took another turn when Holmer pulled another goal back with 3 minutes of the half left.
HALF TIME MOULTON 4 HOLMER GREEN 2
The start of the second half was nowhere near as exciting as the first with neither goal under serious threat, until 58 minutes had elapsed. Asante won a tackle in midfield (not for the first time in the game) and fed Macarthy who crossed for ANSU to convert his second of the match. One of a number of the clubs promising Under 18 players Joel Machakaire joined the fray just after replacing O,Neill and within 15 minutes the hosts put the game to bed with a 6th goal. Ansu, Macarthy and Asante were all involved and ANSU finished off the move he started with a neat chip over the diving keeper from 8 yards, to compete his hat-trick. Holmer didn’t give up however and reduced the arrears again from a free kick with 10 mins left. Any lingering hopes of a late comeback for the visitors were dashed on 85 minutes, when Ansu got through again and forced the visitor’s keeper to save but EVANS was on hand to follow up and convert the rebound. This game and win finished a punishing schedule of 5 games in 10 days and stretched resources to the limit both on and off the field and left the Magpies in a creditable 7th place in the table with 2 league games left.
