Coventry United, nicknamed ‘The Red & Greens’, were founded in 2013 following the takeover of Coventry Spartans by four local businessmen with a dream. The club's debut league match took place at Kenilworth Town in the Midland Football League Division 3 on Sat, 13 Aug 2013, with a 2-1 victory. United finished runners-up to Kenilworth, securing promotion. Coventry United also reached their first Cup final, The Challenge Vase, losing 3-1 to Enville Athletic FC. The club's first league title followed the next season. Coventry United dominated MFL Division 2, finishing 15 points ahead of its closest rivals. Their progression to Step 6 of the Non-League Pyramid followed. Season 3 saw Coventry United fighting for the Division 1 title with the likes of Bromsgrove Sporting, Lichfield, and Nuneaton Griff.
In March 2016, Edwin Greaves left the club and was replaced on an interim basis by Terry Anderson, along with his assistant, Luke Morton. Under Terry's stewardship, United began a run to win their final 11 matches, conceding just 3 goals along the way. Consequently, they beat their competition to the title. Afterwards, Anderson and Morton's roles were secured on a permanent basis. Following a flurry of promotions, Coventry settled into the MFL Premier Division.
Following stints at The Cage (Alan Higgs Centre) and Sphinx Drive, the summer of 2017 saw United move into their new home, the Butts Park Arena. After 5 seasons in the MFL Premier Division and finishing as Coventry's highest-ranked non-league club for 5 years in a row, the restructuring of the non-league pyramid saw Coventry United placed in the United Counties League Premier Division South for the 2021/22 season, where they have since remained. Last season saw them end up in 7th league position with 62 points from their 36 games (19 wins; 5 draws; 12 defeats).
This season currently sees them in 8th position, one behind Moulton but with games in hand. From their 13 games they have 23 points, having won 6, drawn 5 and lost 2 (Aylestone Park at home on the opening day of the season and away at Atherstone Town). Their last 4 league games has seen them win 3 v Sileby (A) 5-0, Daventry (H) 2-0 and Yaxley (H) 5-1 at the end of Sept (the last goal they conceded). Their other match was a 0-0 draw v Bugbrooke (A). Regarding goals conceded, they are currently at the top of the goals conceded table, having conceded only 11 (23 scored). Last weekend they progressed into the next round of the FA Vase with a 5-0 home win v Heanor Town, but were knocked out of the UCL Cup at the beginning of November by Nuneaton Town (A) 0-1. On Tuesday they played West Bromwich Albion in the Birmingham Senior Cup, losing 3-2 on penalties after 0-0 at full time.
Saturday’s referee is scheduled at Mark Watkins, another new name to officiate a Moulton match. We also welcome back Aaron Dickens to Brunting Road, having re-signed for Coventry United in September after brief spells at Sileby, AFC Rushden & Diamonds and ON Chenecks.
